    Happy holidays everyone!

We have a very special gift for you this year - a script for Microtonic called BeatSpace.

    beatSpaceVideo7_600x600.mp4

Using data from nearly 30000 Patternarium presets, we trained a neural network to create stellar-sounding beats and to spread them on a 2-dimensional map. We then converted this neural network into a Javascript for Microtonic that lets you drag eight points around this map to morph and combine sounds and rhythms into your own unique creations.

BeatSpace is included in the latest version of the Official Microtonic Script installer, available for registered Microtonic here. Simply run the installer and use the little puzzle button in Microtonic to open it.

We hope you will have as much fun with this tool as we had creating it.

    / Magnus & Fredrik Lidström

  • Magnus Lidström

    Additional info:

    • Each point is a drum channel in Microtonic.
    • There are 1000 * 1000 unique points.
    • Every point contains sound and pattern data for one channel.
    • Together, they form a constellation, an eight-channel beat.
    • You can right-click to copy and paste constellations. Paste your coolest findings here. 🤩
    • The dice randomizes the eight points.
    • Alt-click for solo, shift for fine, and command/control-click for mute/unmute, as it says in the UI 😉
    • You can undo/redo with the standard Microtonic undo/redo buttons.
    • If you change a channel in Microtonic and the resulting sound differs from the neural network's output, the point will be marked with an X, and its coordinate will be struck through. Touching the point again will reset the channel to the neural network's output.
    • You can also right-click and choose "Enable All Points" to remove all X's.
    • Bright areas in the spacy background represent existing Patternarium data, while dark areas represent points in the map that have been extrapolated from this data. The colors indicate how the network has grouped different types of sounds and pattern data.

  • Bryan Collins

This thing is brilliant, thank you so very much. I want to request that the window be larger and that I can view it separately from the rest of microtonic, because it is so cool! Also visually appealing! But I love it, thank you so very much! You have really won me back to Microtonic I think. I have to see what's up with all the scripts. It's all just very exciting.

I already had Microtonic Vs Microtonic set up in a Combinator 2(Reason) So I loaded that up and hit BeatSpace on both Micro's which are both controlled by two X-Touch Mini's and Maaannn, that was so good akin to DJing. Thank you for the time and effort for this script, it is highly useful

nevermind fixed it, was not reading

  • Roman Gutarev

First of all, thank you for this awesome addition.
There is one issue I found though, if you open Microtonic window, then open BeatSpace, it'll instantly switch to BeatSpace preset, which is fine when you're setting it up first time. but then if you close the window and open it again, it'll switch to random BeatSpace preset once you open script again (and undo doesn't recover previous script state), so it doesn't seem to save BeatSpace state upon closing window, even though it does save script state if you just close script window and open it again, without closing Microtonic window.

One other thing, I would love to be able to automate the points, or just bind them to external controller. personally I would just map it to bigger XY pad with multi-touch support, to be able to adjust many points at once.

  • Stan Magendanz

Brilliant! This will now be my go to beatmaker for inventive & unique beat creation :D

  • Manuel Senfft

Thank you. Just great and good to have! (=

    Fantastic! Thanks so much!

  • Pascal Niemeier

This opens worlds of possibilities! Thank you!
Better - for orientation - than the little circles within the Beatspace would be the number of the associated drum note.
And it would be great if we could undock the Beatspace window from the main window, just comfortable for editing purposes.

Thanks Magnus! I think I bought MT in 2004 (anyways way back) and its still one of my go to drum apps.

Would be super cool if there was a mode where the 8 drum select buttons (top left main interface) could be coloured and those corresponding colours would also appear in the white circles in the BeatSpace window.

  • Greg Jobes

    Absolutely AMAZING!!

I hope you know BeatSpace could be a NEW product that MANY people would buy. I know I would :) It kind of reminds me of XO, but in a different, cooler, AI kind of way.

ALSO, I'd love to see the window bigger. It's soooooo small on my 4k screen ... even with zoom at 200%.

Thanks a ton for this completely unexpected gift!!

  • Sebastian Ramos

    - Roman Gutarev wrote:

Depending on what is possible, maybe Microtonic could just have an optional pane to open as a scripts workspace?

So the scripts would technically behave the same as part of the Microtonic window, and could be moved around within the window freely. But the pane that the user could open would just be expanding the window size with empty workspace.

Or is it possible to create a skin that is wider than the GUI to add that pane? That empty space could be covered in stickers :)

Maybe something along the lines of this? Where you would choose in the menu to show and hide the workspace pane (or whatever it would be called). Is that possible? Is that a dumb idea?

Yes, also a great idea - depends on which task is simplier to do for an update, it would just be great, if the plugin gui itself is not covered anymore during use of a script.

You just need to download and run the scripts installer as mentioned by Magnus in the first post.

BeatSpace is included in the latest version of the Official Microtonic Script installer, available for registered Microtonic here. Simply run the installer and use the little puzzle button in Microtonic to open it.

When opening closing the gui of microtonic and then opening beatspace dialogue , it automatically selects a new beat .
    Steps to reproduce
    -Open beat dialogue
    -choose random beat
-Opening-closing the beat dialogue meanu does NOT alter the selected beat
-Now , close and reopen microtonic gui
    -Open beat dialogue
Result : a new beat is automatically selected

It's so engaging as a way to stimulate ideas and elegantly implemented. Your commitment to ongoing development is so much appreciated - thank you!

Any way to edit the script to be able to map the "Random" button to MIDI please?
Also, how do I auto-load the script so that beatspace opens automatically when Microtonic starts?

    Thank you.

  • public_display_name

This is amazing and should be a default feature of all hardware synth-drum machines :)

  • Nick Kaniak

Are there any plans to make the points in the beatspace map Midi-mappable? Right now, it's the one reason I'm not pulling the trigger on it.
